Innovative artists Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust welcome you to their colorful exhibition. Shakkei marks the first museum exhibition for these two Chicago-based artists.
Back by popular demand, the grande dame of Japanese Blues music, YOKO NOGE and her trio perform during the evening. EAM first presented a performance by the band during SOUNDBITES in July to large acclaim. Dancing is encouraged!
The exhibition takes its title from the Japanese principle of Shakkei—or “borrowed scenery”—a design philosophy that harmonizes built environments with the surrounding natural landscape. Lake and Faust interpret this concept broadly, using it as a metaphor for empathy, adaptability, and the capacity to hold multiple perspectives at once. Their works reflect a deep engagement with personal history, place, and the transformative power of shared visual language.
